Love Story
Susan and Chris just celebrated their TENTH wedding anniversary and commissioned MelodyWed to create a custom love song to commemorate it. Susan is an army wife living in Hawaii with her daughters while her husband works as an air crew training and standards instructor for the Black Hawk helicopter. She decided to surprise Chris with this special gift and proceeded to tell me their story.
It was a 1980 Golden Chevy El Camino.
Susan and Chris both grew up in Alabama and met in high school. He drove a gold El Camino and she thought he was just the coolest. He forgot her name when asking her out, and the first time he brought her home, his momma predicted they would get married. They eloped and have often felt like it was “just us” as they travel all over the world for his job with the army.
As far as musical genre goes, Susan told me that she and Chris connect over Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Eagles. Because of those deep south, soft rock influences, I decided to channel a bit of Miranda Lambert — that laid back, true country feel.
And in that vein, the crux of the song fell on this idea of a train heist and the characters of Bonnie and Clyde. She said that when Chris is away for training, it can be a trying time for their relationship, but they have developed a deep trust for one another and call each other Bonnie and Clyde. They have each other’s back in the toughest of times.
I’ll be your Bonnie, you’ll be my Clyde: partners in this criminal thing called life.
This song just screamed for a male-female duet, so I asked my friend Ryan if he would record again with me. He said, “Yes,” and the rest, as we know, is history.
It was such an honour to get to know Susan and Chris’ unique story and to write their custom love song. Happy Tenth Anniversary, Susan and Chris, and here’s to many more!
